Winter Legs Crochet version

Legwarmers. Just can’t get enough! I’ve already shared a knit pattern, but as you know, I am bi-crafty! I truly love being able to knit and crochet. It means my options are doubled!

So today, I give you- Winter Legs, crochet edition!

Once again, I am using the Red Heart Super Saver Stripes. 100% acrylic means easy wash and dry care. I made these (both the knit and crochet versions) for my nieces. These girls are a lovers of digging in the dirt and jumping in puddles and running around with their dogs and working in the yard with dad; washability is appreciated.

infatuated with granny squares?

Are you new to crochet? Ready to go beyond a scarf? The Vasix Shawl is a modern take on the classic granny crochet stitch. Perfect for beginners, this pattern is easy to follow and works up quickly. With just a few basic stitches and a few skeins of yarn, you will have a beautiful wrap that can be dressed up or down. Vasix will keep you warm around the house or complete your look for Saturday errands. You can choose to make your own Vasix Shawl using 3 colors (as shown), or even a solid color if you don’t feel ready to make color changes or try a self striping yarn.

will you be stitching an Infatuation sweater?

Will you do something for me? If you make this sweater, I would be so so grateful if you’d permit me to feature your work on a gallery page and show others how wonderfully fabulous you are. This would also allow me to be able to showcase how this sweater looks in various yarns and on multiple people and their styles.  I, and your fellow crochet lovers, would be so so grateful to have additional samples to view! If this is something you would like to help with, you can find me on all the social places (links are on the upper right corner of this page) or you can leave a comment with your social @ and I’ll find you. If you post pics on social and use #InfatuationSweater, I’ll likely reach out to you that way, too.

the irrational decision for infatuation

There’s always a story! I’ve started writing a design diary. It is the chronicling of the day to day process and silliness of designing each piece. Maybe you’d like a little behind the scenes peek into my world.

A note on using a different yarn

Because of the yardage difference from old skein to new, I was unsure what length they would be if I used all of the yarn, which was definitely my goal. I’m not great at throwing away my yarn scraps but I’m not great at using them, either. You can see that this causes… well, issues of teeny yarn balls in many glass jars. So, if you are using a skein with 220 (a typical amount for a worsted skein of wool), I suggest either winding off half the skein and using a scale to ensure your halves are even, or doing as I did- knit from both ends.

While knitting your Winters Legs, Knit Warmers, If you choose to knit from both ends of your skein, I recommend your first leg warmer to start with the outer end. By starting with the outside, you will save yourself from the wrapping of yarn around the other warmer that will likely happen as you pull yarn off for stitching. From previously using the strata yarn, I know that 202 yds [185 m] will produce 2 leg warmers with 2″ [5 cm] bottom rib, 13″ [33 cm] stockinette, and 2″ [5 cm] top rib. So I followed the pattern for the new warmer until 2nd ribbing. At this point, I started the 2nd warmer with the inner yarn end and worked same point. I then added a few rows to one and then the other and when I started to get nervous about the remaining yarn being enough to create the finishing rib, I stopped adding length and made the upper ribbings. Barely winning the game of yarn chicken with 26″ [66 cm] after casting off both warmers- whew! If you do not enjoy the anxiety of yarn chicken, you should weigh your skein after completing the first ribbing on the first warmer, this will tell you exactly how much yarn you used and what you will need to reserve (x2) for your final ribbings. If you choose to knit both warmers at the same time, you will need 2 sets of double pointed needles in size US 8 [5 mm]

Sometimes it can be difficult to find the larger hook sizes while in-person shopping. So I’m adding a few links for you. Another thing you should be aware of is that not all hook “sizes” are the same. Within recent years, they’ve changed. Once, a “P” hook was 10mm. Now, the same brand has “N/15” as 10mm (and no, I do not know the reason for this change, although I have reached out with the question).
You can read a bit more about hooks, sizing and choosing the right hooks for you HERE.

*These are affiliate links, purchasing from a link will earn RevelCrochet a small reward at no additional cost to you. 🥰

If you, like me, have older│inherited│thrifted hooks that are not marked and you are unsure of what size they are, I recommend picking up a sizing tool. The pink  Lacis and purple, elephant Knitter’s Pride are the ones I use.

NOTIONS Removable stitch markers, yarn needle
