the basics with vasix

Are you new to crochet? Ready to go beyond a scarf? The Vasix Shawl is a modern take on the classic granny crochet stitch. Perfect for beginners, this pattern is easy to follow and works up quickly. With just a few basic stitches and a few skeins of yarn, you will have a beautiful wrap that can be dressed up or down. Vasix will keep you warm around the house or complete your look for Saturday errands. You can choose to make your own Vasix Shawl using 3 colors (as shown), or even a solid color if you don’t feel ready to make color changes or try a self striping yarn.

will you be stitching a vasix?

Will you do something for me? If you make this shawl, I would be so so grateful if you’d permit me to feature your work on a gallery page and show others how incredible you are. This would also allow me to be able to showcase how this shawl looks in various yarns and on multiple people and their styles.  I, and your fellow crochet lovers, would be so so grateful to have additional samples to view! If this is something you would like to help with, you can find me on all the social places (links are on the upper right corner of this page) or you can leave a comment with your social @ and I’ll find you. If you post pics on social and use #VasixShawl, I’ll likely reach out to you that way, too.

the Making of vasix

There’s always a story! I’ve started writing a design diary. It is the chronicling of the day to day process and silliness of designing each piece. Maybe you’d like a little behind the scenes peek into my world.

Sometimes it can be difficult to find the larger hook sizes while in-person shopping. So I’m adding a few links for you. Another thing you should be aware of is that not all hook “sizes” are the same. Within recent years, they’ve changed. Once, a “P” hook was 10mm. Now, the same brand has “N/15” as 10mm (and no, I do not know the reason for this change, although I have reached out with the question).
You can read a bit more about hooks, sizing and choosing the right hooks for you HERE.

If you have hooks that are not marked and you are unsure of what size they are, I recommend picking up a sizing tool. The pink  Lacis and purple, elephant Knitter’s Pride are the ones I use.

NOTES

GENERAL

  • Pattern is written in US terms with imperial and metric measurements.
  • Yarn amount given is for shawl as shown│written. Yardage [m] will vary with any alterations of pattern.
  • Read through each line before beginning to avoid any confusion during stitching.
  • Refer to Special Stitches instruction {below}, and Tutorial(s) as needed.
  • The Special Stitches instructions‭ ‬are detailed, written directions on how to complete specialty stitches as worked within this pattern (Pattern pdf also provides illustrations when needed).

CONSTRUCTION

Shawl is worked flat in one piece, turning after every row, top to bottom– long straight edge to bottom point. (Pattern pdf provides Stitch Diagrams & Schematic).

UNDERSTANDING THE PATTERN

  • Pattern is written for 1 size.
  • Number after period (.) at the end of rows is the stitch count; 8 sts. This means the row just completed should have 8 stitches.
  • If no stitch count is given at the end of row, stitch total did not change from previous listing.
  • PM as instructed for identification│future stitch placement reference.
  • Color changes are cut between changes, they are not carried│floated up the sides│edges.
  • When stitching into a “V-st”, work stitches in the ch sp(s) of V-st.
  • Turning chains at beginning of rows do not count as stitches.
  • Sample shown was lightly blocked without pinning; laid flat and steamed to relax│open stitches.
  • Sample shown is exactly as written with no alterations to pattern.
  • Model is 5’ 2” with 49“ [124.5 cm] chest.

TIP

»   Take care when creating chains of V-sts, keeping them uniform in size will produce the best result
