Stani beginner friendly crochet shawl pattern

Familiar?

Waaay back in October of 2018, I created Haystacks using Lion Brand’s Scarfie yarn.

I really love that shawl and wanted to make another for myself (the first I gave away to a friend). I knew I wanted mine to be solid and in a color that more suits my wardrobe.

I put the pdf on my phone and started stitching away.
I quickly realized the wording needed an update. I also found a few little typos and so I decided the whole thing needed a refresh and here we are. Then, of course, as this new shawl is an incredible shade of blushy-dusty pink, the Haystacks name no longer fit.
So now we have, Stani. 💝

Got questions?

I would love to have you join in with the Revel group on facebook. It’s an easy way to quickly get answers to any questions you may have about a pattern. It’s also a drama-free place to share project pictures, get opinions on color options and whatnot, and chit-chat with the rest of us.

About the yarn

A quick disclaimer to remind you that I am a brand ambassador for King Cole yarns. This means they gift me yarn to test out and then I give my honest opinion about it. I loved loved loved this yarn and decided it was perfect for this remake.
It is a loosely plied, 2 ply chunky weight yarn.
It has a recommended needle│hook size of 6.0mm, I jumped to a 8.0mm to ensure supreme drape.

The soft and squishy factor for the King Cole Timeless Chunky is NEXT LEVEL!

164 yd [155 m]/3.53 oz [100 g]), 90% premium acrylic 10% alpaca.
Ya’ll, I don’t know what they do to make the acrylic in this yarn “premium” but they’ve nailed it.
You would absolutely never guess that this is only 10% alpaca.
It’s incredible. I’d even say luxurious. The alpaca gives the yarn a dreamy next-to-skin softness and the gorgeous halo you’d expect from a yarn 3 times the price.

Overall- Oooo La La!

I have not found a US based online retailer for this yarn, so I’m linking to a UK shop with a great reputation.
Check your local yarn store & ask them to carry King Cole yarns! I’ve been very happy with every yarn I’ve gotten to sample 🥰

The sizes available

Stani Crochet Shawl is written for 1 size. It is sized to fit the average Teen│Adult but is a touch longer than many shawls, so it is a great option for me & my plus-sized friends! You can easily adjust the size to fit the amount of yarn you are wanting to use or if you want something a little larger or smaller.

There are a few tips about sizing written within the pattern.

Getting started

Ya’ll know how I feel about making gauge swatches.
Make them.
However, for this shawl, gauge is not crucial to your project. With that said, I still highly recommend you create a swatch with the yarn and hook you intend to use for your shawl to make sure you will be happy with the drape of the fabric it will create and will result in size intended.

This is especially important if you are using a differing yarn weight than suggested.

But also, because I know most people aren’t going to make a swatch (I see you! 👀 ) and I want you to be successful in your yarny endeavors, I’ve built an easy gauge swatch into the pattern.

Since we’re having the dreaded swatch talk, go ahead and grab this helpful worksheet I created for you to use on your next project, when making a gauge swatch will be a big deal. Save this worksheet to your digital notebook or print a few of these off if you’re a paper planner person.
This will make the swatch process easier and more enjoyable. I created this FREE worksheet as an easy way to figure out gauge, it’s especially helpful if you’re new and still learning all the ways to be successful with your crochet. This worksheet organizes your stitching information and the fill-in-the-blanks makes the math stress free.

NOTES

GENERAL

  • Pattern is written in US terms with imperial and metric measurements.
  • Pattern is written for 1 size.
  • Yarn amount(s) given is for shawl as shown│written. Yardage [m] will vary with any alterations of pattern.
  • Read through each line before beginning to avoid any confusion during stitching.
  • Gauge information is given above as well as within the pattern; verify that project measurements match given measurements.
  • Place a Stitch Marker in the first st of each row to aid in stitch count│placement, if needed; move marker(s) up with each row.
  • Refer to Special Stitches instruction below; Stitch Diagrams and Schematic are available in the pdf download, if needed.
  • Although precise gauge is not necessary for this item, it is recommended to make a swatch, using same yarn as intended for shawl, to ensure fabric created is as desired and will result in size intended {see Swatch Guide for basics on proper swatch creation}.

CONSTRUCTION

  • Shawl is worked tip to tip; increasing on one side to center point then decreasing along same side. Optional tassels are then added to the 3 corners.

UNDERSTANDING THE PATTERN

  • Shawl is worked flat, turning after every row.
  • There are no ‘turning chains’ at the end of rows.
  • Chains count as stitches.
  • Number after period (.) at the end of rows is the stitch count; 12 sts. This means the row just completed should have 12 stitches.
  • If no stitch count is given at the end of row, stitch total did not change from previous listing.
  • Because this is a Beginner pattern, there are helpers at the end of each row to aid in the understanding of reading a written pattern and ensuring a successful project. Following the stitch count, in ( ) are the exact stitches from the row.
  • Special Stitches instructions‭ ‬are detailed, written directions on how to complete specialty stitches as worked within this pattern.
  • To alter the width, instructions are written within the pattern.
  • To alter the length, instructions are written within the pattern.
