Another free crochet sweater pattern for ya! Yikes, it’s been a few weeks since I have posted. I think I should have quite a few more things finished up and ready soon, though.

A bit back, I purchased this yarn with the intent of making a shawl. But I hated it.

So, I let it hang out on my desk for a while and pondered what new life it wanted to have

The yarn definitely needed something simple. An easy going, double crochet top with interesting sleeves was the answer

This unique construction is not something I created on my own, it is from a vintage German sewing catalog of modular design. I liked it and thought this shaping would transfer to crochet well.

YARN: DK weight (#3 light); 994 (994, 1122, 1223, 1403, 1403, 1538, 1611, 1753) yd [1087 (1087, 1227, 1338, 1538, 1538, 1682, 1762, 1916) m]; shown: Noro, Kibou, (54% cotton, 34% wool, 12% silk; 295 yd [270 m]/3.53 oz [100 gm]) in #4, 11, 9; 4 (4, 4, 5, 5, 5, 6, 6, 6) skeins

Other yarns to try:
Malabrigo Silky Merino 51% silk 49% merino; 150 yds [137 m], 1.76 oz [50 g] -- Without the cotton content of the Noro, this yarn will have quite a bit more drape to it's finished fabric, which will be oh-so-lovely and would produce a lovely top for an evening out.

Lion Brand CoBoo 50% acrylic 50% bamboo, 232 yds [212 m], 3.53 oz [100 g] -- Another soft and slinky -and super affordable!- option.

HOOK: H [5 mm]

NOTIONS: Tapestry needle, locking stitch markers (6)

GAUGE: 16 sts and 6.5 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in double crochet

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Circumference at hip- 36 (36, 43, 43, 53, 53, 60, 60, 67) [91.5 (91.5, 109, 109, 134.5,134.5, 152.5, 152.5, 170) cm] Length- 20 (20, 20, 21, 21, 21, 21, 22, 22) [51 (51, 51, 53.5, 53.5, 53.5, 53.5, 56, 56) cm]  after blocking.
Sample shown in Size S, model is 5’ 6” with 34“ [81 cm] top hip, 32”[81 cm] bust This top can be worn with anywhere from 2-8½ (+)” [5-21.5 cm] positive ease at the hip, choose the size with your desired fit.

ABBREVIATIONS:

Blo- back loop only

Dc- double crochet

NOTES:

• Top is worked sideways in 2 pieces, front and back/sleeves, seamed at shoulder, then back folded at front edge and seamed to create sleeves (see schematic).
• Take time to save time. Stitch and wash a gauge swatch in the same manner you will be using for your garment to ensure proper measurements. This fabric does not need stretching. Soak/wash, then lay flat to dry. 
• Measure the top hip, make size according to the ease/fit you desire. 
• Read through each line before beginning to avoid any confusion during stitching.
• Remember, if needed, a stitch diagram, schematic, and construction illustrations are available through my Etsy store and at LoveCrochet.

SPECIAL STITCHES:

Fdc (foundation double crochet): Ch 3, yo, insert hook in 3^rd ch from hook, yo, pull up a loop, yo and draw through 1 loop (1 chain made), [yo and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice (1^st foundation double crochet made), *Yo, insert hook under the 2 bottommost horizontal bars of the chain portion of fdc just made, yo, pull up a loop, yo and draw through 1 loop (1 chain made), [yo and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice (dc made); repeat from * for indicated number of foundation sts.
Stacked dc (stacked double crochet): Sc in indicated st, insert hook behind leftmost vertical bar of sc just made and pull up a loop, yo and draw through 2 loops on hook. You may replace this with a traditional ch-3 if desired.

Top

Back/Sleeves

Customization:

To lengthen torso & widen sleeves, add more stitches when creating your foundation row; to shorten, work fewer stitches; refer to gauge for number of stitches you want to add/remove.
Make a notation of number added or subtracted for referral when making Front.

Back/Sleeves

Row 1 (RS):  Fdc 79 (79, 79, 83, 83, 83, 83, 87, 87), turn.

Row 2:  Stacked dc in first dc, dc in flo of ea st across, turn.

Row 3:  Stacked dc in first dc, dc in blo of ea st across, turn.

Row 4- 65 (65, 71, 71, 79, 79, 85, 85, 91): Rep Rows 2-3.

Row 66 (66, 72, 72, 80, 80, 86, 86, 92): Rep Row 2, fasten off.

With RS facing, turn piece so that rows are vertical, PM in upper edge stitch of Row 6 (6, 8, 8, 12, 12, 14, 14, 17) from both right and left sides for shoulder seaming/neck opening.

Front

Row 1 (RS):  With a beginning tail of approx. 12” [30 cm], fdc 79 (79, 79, 83, 83, 83, 83, 87, 87), PM in 40 (40, 40, 42, 42, 42, 42, 44, 44) stitch to mark sleeve placement, turn.

Row 2-23 (29, 35, 41, 47, 53, 59, 65, 71): Work as back.

Row 24 (30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72): Rep Row 2 of back, PM in 40 (40, 40, 42, 42, 42, 42, 44, 44) stitch to mark sleeve placement, fasten off.

With RS facing, turn piece so that rows are vertical, PM in upper edge stitch of Row 6 (6, 8, 8, 12, 12, 14, 14, 17) from both right and left sides for shoulder seaming/neck opening.

Construction

With RS facing up, place Back on a flat surface, marked edges at top.

With WS facing up, (having right sides together) and marked edges at top, center Front between markers on Back, matching top edges.

Using tail end when available, thread yarn needle and sew Front to Back across shoulders with mattress stitch.
Do NOT turn right side out.

Bring upper right corner of Back to stitch above marker for sleeve placement on Front.

Using mattress stitch, sew Front to Back between shoulder seam and marker.

Bring lower right corner of Back to stitch below marker for sleeve placement on Front.

Using mattress stitch, sew Front to Back between bottom hem edge and marker.

Repeat for second sleeve.

Finishing

Weave in ends. Lightly wet block or steam edges and seams for best results.
