a fresh look at keck

In 2020, I made this change-of-season top. It has half sleeves and nice little ribbed neckline, a longer torso and it is stitched in an affordable alpaca blend. It was a great top for me at the time. During these past 2 years, I have made significant changes in my life that have resulted in changes to my body (I stopped all sugar! Yes, really. 😳) The first version of my Keck top no longer fits. I decided to make another- because I really liked the first one. But I made a few modifications for my new Keck. I needed my new Keck to be a lite sweater, for the warmer weather of my city.

1 (2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, +)

As always, this top is size inclusive. What that means is, I have written this pattern for 10+ sizes.  Ranging from the standard XS – to 6X with an extra (+) for an added level positive ease. See Finished Measurements below for the inches│centimeters of each size.

The way to decide which size you should make, is to first decide what kind of ease you’d like for the tee to have (you want it a little snug? or a little loose?). For example, the Keck lite I am wearing has a 1″ [2.5 cm] negative ease (smaller). My chest is 45“ [114.5 cm] and the Keck lite is 44″ [112 cm]. 

Then, follow the instructions for the size with the finished measurements you want.

The .pdf pattern includes a Sizing│Ease chart to make determining the proper size super simple (imperial & metric).

about the yarn

Comfy Cotton Blend is a 50│50 cotton & polyester blend by Lion Brand Yarns. It is listed as a DK│3 light weight yarn, buuuut… I’ve not done a WPI (wraps per inch) test on it or anything science-y & official, but I’ll say that in hand and in stitching, it maybe could also be considered a light worsted. 

The Comfy Cotton is made up of 2 sets of 2 ply- the cotton strands are matte while the polyester strands have a sheen to them, combining the two gives a subtle tonal quality to the yarn.

NOTES

GENERAL

  • Pattern is written in US terms with imperial and metric measurements.
  • Yarn amount given is for top as shown│written. Yardage [m] will vary with any alterations of pattern.
  • Read through each line before beginning to avoid any confusion during stitching.
  • Refer to Special Stitches instruction {below}, and Tutorial(s) as needed.
  • The Special Stitches instructions‭ ‬are detailed, written directions on how to complete specialty stitches as worked within this pattern (Pattern pdf also provides illustrations when needed).

CONSTRUCTION

Top is worked flat, bottom up in 2 pieces- Front│Back, turning after every row, divided for neck opening│shoulders and rejoined for second side. Seam across shoulders│sleeves and sides│sleeves, then edging(s) added (Pattern pdf provides Stitch Diagrams & Schematic).

UNDERSTANDING THE PATTERN

  • Pattern is written for 10 sizes, with an additional ‘+’ size to allow for further positive ease options.
  • Sizes given in parentheses: 36 (40, 44, …). If only one number is given, it applies to all sizes.
  • Number after period (.) at the end of rows is the stitch count; 12 sts. This means the row just completed should have 12 stitches.
  • If no stitch count is given at the end of row, stitch total did not change from previous listing.
  • Pattern is written for cropped length {refer to Customizations for a guide to adjusting}.  
  • For cropped sweater- choose sizing from chest measurement, make size according to ease│fit desired. See Ease Chart for quick reference to sizing.
  • The top is reversible, with no Front│Back; identical piece is made for each.
  • Turning chains at beginning of rows do not count as stitches.
  • When working into a V-st, work around the center chains│into the space created by chs, encasing the chs of V-st.
  • PM as instructed for identification│future stitch placement reference.
  • It is recommended to block completed top to “open” lace stitches. Refer to Blocking: A Guide for basic blocking methods│instructions.
  • Sample shown was blocked without stretching│pinning, laid flat and steamed to relax│open stitches prior to seaming. The seams were then steamed to relax│ease  sewn joins.
  • Sample shown is exactly as written with no alterations to pattern. 
  • Sample shown in Size 5│44” [112 cm]; model is 5’ 2” with 45“ [114.5 cm] chest, 48” [122 cm] hip. 

TIPS

»  Highlight or circle the size numbers to be made in each row before beginning for easier following.

»   Take care when creating chains of V-sts, keeping them uniform in size will produce the best result.

Back ridge Rather than working under the top loops or ‘V’ of foundation chain, turn chain upside-down, insert hook under the single strand of yarn that is bump│ridge-like in appearance, work stitch as normal.

Bphdc (back post half double crochet) Yo, insert hook from back to front to back around post of st indicated, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw through all loops on hook. 

Fphdc (front post half double crochet) Yo, insert hook from front to back to front around post of st indicated, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw through all loops on hook. 

Fsc (foundation single crochet) {Video tutorial} {Photo tutorial} Ch 2, insert hook into back ridge of 2nd ch from hook, pull up a loop, yo, draw through 1 loop (1 chain made), yo, draw through 2 loops on hook (first foundation single crochet made), *insert hook under the 2 bottommost horizontal bars of the chain just made, pull up a loop, yo, draw through 1 loop (1 chain made), yo, draw through 2 loops on hook; rep from * for 1 less than indicated number of foundation sts.

Assembly

Remove markers. Wet blocksteam FrontBack pieces to measurements before seaming (Pattern pdf provides schematic).

With RS together, using long tails from necklineshoulders and yarn needle, sew front to back across shoulderssleeves using interlocking stitch.

Repeat for 2nd side.

Measure a length of yarn approximately 3-4x length of sidesleeve underarm for seam, with RS together, using yarn and yarn needle, sew front to back from sleeve edge across underarm, then down to hem using interlocking stitch.

Edging

SLEEVES
With RS facing, using larger hook, J [6 mm], join new yarn at underarm seam with sl st, evenly sl st around to end, fasten off.

Repeat for 2nd sleeve.

NECK
With RS facing, using larger hook, J [6 mm], join new yarn at at neck edge in shoulder seam with sl st, evenly sl st around to end, fasten off.

Remove marker(s), weave in ends.

To relax seams and edges, wet blocksteam if desired. ♦
