You ready for a free crochet hat pattern?

Did you see the last crochet pattern released? Cascade Falls, a waterfall front long vest

Because, as you know, everything has a backstory-
The way this hat came to be:
While scrolling through Instagram, ohmygosh, I could spend SO MUCH time there, I actually have to set a timer for myself otherwise I would… anyway, scrolling through Instagram and I see this little video of someone making this great defined line stitch and no- its not knit… ya’ll, she’s crocheting it!!

Gasp! I grab my yarn and start stitching away and after a few replays and retrys, I’ve got it down. And then, my phone did its thing and went black. Ya’ll, I totally lost the post.

No idea who I need to give credit to for teaching me this amazing new-to-me stitch. I don’t remember the name, I know that it was long and had “knit” in it… but she was speaking another language and I just have no clue how to search for it. 🙁

Grey hat with large, black, faux fur pom pom laying on a black granite surface with fallen, tan leaves placed around.

But I am so so grateful to this amazing stitcher for sharing her knowledge in a 45 second video. Thank you thank you, wherever you are!!

YARN: Worsted weight (#4 medium); Beanie 220 yd [201 m] Slouch 245 yd [224 m]; shown: Red Heart Yarns, Chich Sheep by Marly Bird, (100% merino wool; 186 yd [170 m]/3.53 oz [100 gm]) in Platinum; 2 (2) skeins

Other yarns to try:

Lion Brand Touch of Alpaca 90% acrylic 10% alpaca; 207 yds [189 m], 3.53 oz [100 g] – I just ordered some of this in blush, watch for a new thing 😀
It is very soft to touch and would be an oh-so-cozy hat. the alpaca content gives it just the slightest halo. Lovely

Cascade Pinwheel 100% acrylic; 440 yds [402 m], 7.05 oz [200 g] – If you’d like to make this with a fade effect, this yarn would be a great choice, fun colors and you’d only need 1 ball, with enough left over to make a matching pom!

HOOK: H [5 mm]

NOTIONS: Tapestry needle, locking stitch markers (2)

GAUGE: 14 sts and 16 rows = 4″ [10 cm] in single crochet

FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Ribbing 2¾” [7 cm], Crown center 1½” [3.75 cm], Beanie body 5¾” [14.75 cm], Slouch body 7¾” [19.75 cm] Beanie 10” [25.5 cm], Slouch 12” [30.5 cm] height, circumference custom.

PROJECT LEVEL: Easy +

TECHNIQUES USED: chain – single crochet – slip stitch – single bar crochet – seaming

ABBREVIATIONS:

Ch- chain

Ea- each

Flo- front loop only

PM- place marker

Rem- remain

Rep- repeat

RS- right side

Sb- single bar crochet

Sc- single crochet

Sl st- slip stitch

St(s)- stitch(es)

Yo- yarn over (hook)

WS- wrong side

NOTES:

  • Hat is worked flat and sideways, then seamed, the crown is then cinched closed
  • As the hat is made, the rectangle will naturally bias (angle), due to the sb stitch, this will largely correct itself after seaming.
  • Take time to save time. Stitch and wash a gauge swatch in the same manner you will be using for your garment to ensure proper measurements. This fabric does not need stretching. Soak/wash, then lay flat to dry.
  • Read through each line before beginning to avoid any confusion during stitching.
  • Remember, if needed, a stitch diagram, schematic, and construction illustrations are available through my Etsy store and at LoveCrochet.

SPECIAL STITCHES:

Sb (single bar crochet): insert hook from bottom to top, under horizontal bar that lies below the front loop of the row, yo, pull up a loop, yo, draw through both loops on hook [see illustration below].
